Iboro Uko is a brand identity designer building systems, not logos, for fintech, travel, fashion, publishing and consumer apps.

Context

Everybody has a January goal. Almost nobody still has it in March. That gets blamed on discipline, but the real problem is simpler: a promise you make only to yourself has no witness. Quitting costs you nothing, and nobody ever finds out you quit.

Goalpal puts one other person on the far side of that promise. You choose a goal, you choose someone, and from then on the thing is shared. You check in and they see it. They go quiet for two days and you see that too. There is no leaderboard and no crowd, just one human being who will notice.

It is built for people who have already tried the other way. The notebook. The app with the green squares. The gym subscription that ran for a year and got used in February. In testing, most of what people brought to it had nothing to do with fitness: a book a month, a language, an alarm early enough to be a person before work starts.

Approach

The mark is two chain links hooked into one another, the way two people hook fingers on a pinky promise. Coral on the left, lime on the right, and they properly weave: coral passes over lime at the top and ducks under it at the bottom, so what you are looking at is a real interlock and not two rings parked next to each other.

Then the part people usually spot second. The coral link is a G and the lime link is a P. Goalpal, sitting in plain view. That is why coral has to be on the left, and why the weave runs the direction it runs. Even out the band weights or swap the two colours and both letters quietly disappear.

So the mark is the product argument in one shape. Two things that hold because they are linked, and neither one closes on its own.

Six principles carry everything after that, and they settle arguments about which features ship as often as they settle how an icon gets drawn. Two people, one goal. Pick one thing. The streak is the story. Talk like a friend, not a coach. A missed day is not a verdict. Every edge is drawn.

System

There are twelve colours and every one of them has a job. Coral and lime belong to the brand and are never asked to do anything else. Nine more exist so you can tell your goals and your people apart at a glance. Flame is the only accent, saved for the one moment on a screen that has earned it.

Everything you can see has an outline, a real weight, and a shadow that lands where an actual light would put it. Nothing floats and nothing fades out. That is the same rule the writing follows, drawn instead of written.

Space Grotesk does all the talking, two weights, no italics, and it was chosen for a stubborn practical reason: its squared terminals and tall lowercase still hold their shape at small sizes sitting next to a 2.5 px border, where softer typefaces turn to mush. The wordmark is cut straight out of its Bold. IBM Plex Mono lives in the documentation and is not allowed into the app.

The voice is written as rules with reasons attached, not as a list of adjectives. "Crush it", "grind" and "failed" are out, each with an explanation of why. A day that did not happen is not a failure, so nothing in this app ever turns red because somebody had a bad Tuesday.

Outcome

A 25-page brand guideline covering foundation, audience, mark construction and clearspace, minimum sizes, lockup, colourways, misuse, colour roles and contrast, typography, voice, iconography, pattern, keylines, UI components, and the app icon and splash.

Context

towhatend is my own literary imprint, a place where writing is treated as thinking rather than output. The name is a question, written as one lowercase word and spoken as three. The gap between the two spellings is the whole brand.

A personal imprint is the hardest identity work there is. No product to anchor to, no committee to argue with. The only test is whether it sounds like the person.

Approach

The mark is built from two nsibidi symbols, an indigenous system of graphic writing from south-eastern Nigeria used for centuries to record ideas, agreements and journeys. I take my own roots from the Annang people of Abak, in Akwa Ibom State, so this is a script from home rather than an alphabet borrowed for its texture. Voyage is four strokes, a movement between two points. Eleven is a closed loop with branching above and a fern below. Eleven is turned on its side and set inside voyage: a journey, numbered.

Nsibidi is a writing system, not ornament. Using it obliges the brand to use it correctly and to credit the Ejagham, Efik, Ibibio and Igbo peoples plainly wherever the mark is explained. That credit is written into the guidelines as a rule, not a footnote.

System

One colour does the work: Burnt Terracotta. Most of the time it appears as an accent, a rule, a seal, a number in a margin. It is allowed to take over a whole surface on covers and on physical goods, where there is paper underneath it and you can feel what you are holding. Deep Black leads, terracotta answers, and the two are never in competition.

Two typefaces, and they are kept apart on purpose. Archivo handles every heading, label and number, the voice of the machinery. Recoleta is reserved for the written word itself and is never allowed near an interface, so the reading always feels like a different act from the navigating.

Everything is dated and numbered under one prefix. A letter is TWE-2026-001, a postcard TWE-PC-001, an edition TWE-026. Not to archive it, but to admit a thought belongs to a particular day and might not hold on another.

Materials are chosen for touch rather than shine: 120–150 gsm uncoated cotton, two inks, a 30 mm terracotta wax seal pressed while it is still soft. The paper should tell you what it is before you have read a word of it.

Outcome

A 42-page identity manual, Edition 001, issued 14 August 2026, covering foundation, mark construction, colour ratios, contrast pairings, a full correspondence system and application rules. It is written to be amended: where the document is silent, the instruction is to choose the quieter option.

Context

Steelo’s is a Nigerian luxury clothing house founded in 2026 by Favour Chuku Cyprian. It was built on one belief: that a man should not have to shout to be heard. The brief was quiet luxury for the Nigerian market: clean suits, tailored linen and minimal pieces, at a price that does not treat exclusivity as the product.

Approach

The logo system interlocks two ideas: the lotus and the letter. A lotus rises from water and blooms in stillness, which is the brand’s argument in one image: distinction comes from rooted confidence, not noise. The water wave beneath grounds it: elegance is cultivated below the surface before it appears above it.

The wordmark is a rounded geometric sans set entirely in lowercase. The apostrophe in steelo’s is not punctuation alone. It is a mark of ownership, identity claimed. Clear space is defined by the S-unit, the height of the lowercase s.

Apparel identity lives on the physical object before anyone sees a screen, so the system specifies the garment first: a 25 × 30 mm woven neck tag in charcoal and cream thread, a 30 × 15 mm burgundy neck print, tonal chest embroidery matched to the garment, a 15 × 25 mm hem flag carrying the abbreviated sto mark, and a 40 × 40 mm embroidered sleeve patch.

System

Burgundy anchors the brand: deep, mature, unflinching. Milky cream is the resting tone, the colour of quality cloth left unbleached. Six earth tones reflect the Nigerian landscape and the texture of real fabric. Only four colour pairings are approved, no gradients, and a 4.5:1 minimum contrast ratio is written into the rules.

Applications run from packaging, a 280 gsm kraft shopping bag with burgundy rope handles and a foil-stamped wordmark, then a linen-wrapped PR box with a magnetic lid and wax-sealed lotus, through full stationery, invoicing, social, app icon and a company profile specification.

Art direction closes the document: natural or soft directional light only, no flash aesthetics, models moving with purpose rather than performance, and casting across ages, skin tones and builds because the Steelo’s man is a state of mind rather than a type.

Outcome

A 54-page brand guideline covering overview, two user personas, the full logo system, colour, typography, every printed and garment application, social, and art direction, enough that the label can brief a printer, a tailor and a photographer from one document.

Context

Billmi is a modern banking app built for the African experience. It starts from how people actually use money here: socially, expressively, and often with humour. The brief was to make a financial brand that does not feel cold or distant, without making it feel unserious about holding your money.

Approach

At the centre of the mark is a cowrie shell shaped into the letter B. The cowrie was one of Africa’s earliest currencies, which roots the brand in a monetary history far older than the banks it competes with; drawing it as a single refined form keeps it contemporary rather than heritage pastiche.

It works as symbol and wordmark at once, which is what lets it survive the two hardest placements a fintech faces: a 24 px app icon and a partner bank’s co-branded lockup. The supporting type is deliberately looser and more expressive, carrying the social half of the brand while the B stays confident.

Tone of voice was written as three principles the product team can apply without a designer present: playful but smart, human and warm, confident and modern. The guidelines include a co-branding section with explicit clearance rules and a set of prohibited treatments.

System

A lime-led palette, which is unusual in a category that defaults to blue: Blime as the primary with a deep green, near-black and off-white carrying the structure, plus pink and purple as secondaries for expressive moments. Five approved colour combinations, no free mixing.

Baloo 2 handles display and gives the brand its warmth; Urbanist carries body copy and interface. The document closes with photography direction and a sticker set, because on this product a sticker is a real payment surface, not a garnish.

Outcome

A single continuous brand document covering voice, logo, colour, typography and photography, structured so the engineering team can pull values straight out of it.

Context

Kruis is a premium travel and mobility platform that folds luxury vehicles, curated stays and local experiences into one booking. Its users are people who value control, privacy and discretion, which rules out almost every visual move the travel category normally makes.

The brand promise is four words: you book once, everything aligns. The identity had to carry that without ever raising its voice.

Approach

The mark pairs a refined wordmark with a key. A key is access, ownership and permission: entry that is intentional and curated rather than open to all. It is drawn in minimal geometry so it stays authoritative at any size rather than decorative at large ones.

Four lockups cover every environment: full lockup, wordmark-only, symbol-only and reversed. Inside the product the identity is applied with deliberate restraint, so the brand feels embedded in the interface rather than imposed on it, and the guidelines demonstrate this down to the App Store listing.

The palette is black and white, and that is the decision rather than the absence of one. In a category that signals luxury with gold and deep blue, high-contrast monochrome reads as confidence and ages better than any trend colour would.

System

Afacad carries headers across six weights; DM Sans handles body copy. Brand imagery, social templates and product applications are all specified from the same restrained base.

An 18-page identity covering strategy, positioning, the full logo system, colour, typography, brand imagery and social application, built for a platform that wants to feel engineered rather than advertised.
